From January to July 2024 I will be Interim Director of Music at Christ Church, returning there after my retirement in 2018. It’s an exciting prospect to be covering this interregum in the place I love so much.

From January to July 2024 I will be Interim Director of Music at Christ Church, returning there after my retirement in 2018. It’s an exciting prospect to be covering this interregum in the place I love so much.
On 1 October I gave one of the Sunday afternoon recitals in St. Paul’s. There was an enthusiastic audience of 650 people to hear this wonderful instrument in all its glory.
I was the soloist in two performances of Poulenc’s Organ Concerto with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of John Lubbock. Oxford’s University Church and London’s St. Martin in the Fields were ideal venues for this magnificent work.
Between January and March 2023, I was Interim Director of Music at St. John’s College Cambridge: a wonderful choir and college. Highlights included the live broadcast on Radio 3 of Ash Wednesday choral evensong.
I will be playing Poulenc’s Organ Concerto under the baton of my brother Jonathan who is Music Director of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra. There are two performances in the Meistersingerhalle on 11 and 12 March 2023. Details will be available on the orchestra’s website: www.nuernbergersymphoniker.de
Furman’s music programme is incredibly impressive and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit there as guest clinician in January 2022. A lively group of conference attendees joined with the excellent student choirs. I recommend a visit to Greenville S.C. for anyone who hasn’t been there.
The Friends of Cathedral Music (FCM) and the Ouseley Church Music Trust (OCMT) have launched a Cathedral Choirs’ Emergency Fund to support choirs silenced during the COVID-19 national lockdown. Stephen will be the visiting artist at the prestigious Furman University Church Music Conference in Greenville South Caroline on 27-28 January 2022.
